Day 9 Fort Clinch FL to Summerville SC
milage 287
total milage 2823
We got up at dawn and packed our gear, went out and got some breakfast and then went to Fort Clinch and checked it out. It was under construction when the Civil War started. The confederates continued construction then stopped and left. Union troops showed up, finished the fort and garrissoned it for the war. It was last used during WW II.
We then got on the bikes and headed North. While going thru the Jacksonville area we got caught in a summer squall. I tried to stop under an overpass but it was packed with sports bikes and their unprotected riders, at least we had jackets. We then went over a steep bridge that had 2" of water running down. When we got to the other side the rain stopped and we dried very fast.
We then went to Fort Frederica, an English fort to protect what they called the debatable lands. This was their balance to Fort Cabrillo de San Marcos in St Augestine.
We then headed for Summerville, SC to see Barbara. On the way we ran into another small rain storm. This time we stopped and changed into our rain gear. By the time we finished the rain had stopped. We stayed in our gear thinking there would be more rain. We were wrong and we cooked for two hours.
